 oriphoea project

In Japan people say that the gods grant a wish to whoever makes 1’000 origami cranes.

What I like in this tradition, called senbazuru, is the intimate ritual dimension, the required discipline and the meditative repetition.

While making 1’000 origami, maybe because the peculiar period we are living in, more than crane, I was thinking a lot to another animal, also connected to myth: the phoenix.
Birth from ashes, to die and come back to life in a new shape… these are some of the elements that the firebirds carries in itself.

So, after making 1’000 origami birds, I washed them and I thought that they could be phoenix. Why not? Nobody ever saw a phoenix! I named them “oriphoea” (from “ORIgami” “PHOEnix”).

Oriphoeas became inspiration and starting point for a video project divided in two parts.

    i cacciatori di oriphoee

    (oriphoeas hunters)

“ I cacciatori di oriphoee (oriphoeas hunters) " is a self produced short documentary.

The idea is to make "a poetic documentary", to tell, like a series of images without a real narrative thread, intimate creative gestures, of which I have witnessed, during this pandemic period.

The intent is to find small seeds of beauty in the midst of the chaos of sensations that characterized a unique and unprecedented condition such as that of forced confinement.

The oriphoeas are no longer animated, but they are still present both as physical objects and, above all, as a metaphor.
